Holiday Dresses for that Upcoming Break

It’s getting close to the summer holiday season! Now is the perfect time to pull together a collection of summer holiday dresses for women, as well as other holiday clothing like versatile skirts, pants and tops for your break. You might be taking a trip before the crowds do, heading off during peak season, or taking a late-season summer holiday. Whatever the case, it’s a good idea to get your holiday fashion sorted out so you can tick ‘look fabulous’ off your To Do list!

To make it easy for you, we’ve put together some ideas on what kind of holiday dresses you need in Australia for each type of vacation you might take. Of course, we’ve also included other holiday clothes, because summer holiday outfits can be many and varied, and not everyone wants to wear dresses for holidays.

So, let’s get you covered, fashion-wise, for a few different types of holiday.

The Tropical Holiday

Ok, so you’re lucky enough to be heading somewhere beachy and/or tropical this summer. The things to keep in mind are the weather at your destination, and how much luggage you want to carry! It will most likely be warm, so lightweight, breathable women’s holiday clothing are going to be your best options.

Airy and flowy maxi dresses will feel comfortable and look gorgeous at a beachside bar at dusk. Linen shirts and cotton or viscose blouses, linen pants and boho skirts are all great items to combine with other garments. Cotton and viscose dresses are also quite lightweight, which means you can easily pack a few in your suitcase without exceeding your baggage allowance.

A linen shirt or tunic top will prove handy when you head to the hotel pool or the beach. You can wear it over your bathers for sun protection, and it will dry out easily if it gets damp.

For excursions from your resort, pack a casual summer dress or two. Short dresses and midi length dresses are both great options, as you can easily walk around town, without getting your hem dirty. Shorter-length culotte pants are also a wise choice.

Don’t forget all the extras for sunny weather, like a broad brimmed hat, slip-on shoes or sandals, sunglasses and sunscreen. Also, importantly, don’t forget to save room in your suitcase for holiday shopping, as you’ll likely find some great accessories in the local markets and shops.

The Girl’s Getaway

If you’re heading on a trip with your besties (think a winery tour or a sojourn at a beachside holiday house), you’ll likely want some fun holiday outfits that match with the general good vibes. After all, you’re spending time with buddies, so your vacation dresses are likely to be a talking point.

Printed sundresses are a must, as they are not only vibrant, but also relaxed. They will take you comfortably through from day to night. (Add fun accessories and comfy sandals for an effortless holiday vibe.)

Travelling with friends can bring out extra confidence, so you might like to try wearing some feminine and flirty off-shoulder dresses, or cute floral dresses when you’re heading out for those holiday brunches. Shorter length, casual holiday dresses will also be required, especially when you are leisurely sauntering around local markets or exploring beachside rockpools.

The Family Holiday

Ok, so it might be the holidays, but you still have all those parenting responsibilities to take care of. Wherever you’re headed, you’ll need practical holiday fashion to see you through.

Colourful, eye-catching print summer dresses are a supreme option for mums juggling kids. Think boho dresses and floral dresses. For starters, print dresses look cheerful, which the kids will appreciate, but the print also draws the eye away from stains, which are a given if you have young kids. (Dark-hued women’s holiday dresses also work well for hiding stains, with black or navy summer dresses being chic and classic options.)

In terms of style, shift dresses and shirt dresses are all practical and comfortable options for getting out and about with the family on holiday. Linen dresses are also a really good choice for especially hot days. If you sweat under the sun, the linen will draw the moisture away from your body, keeping you cool!

Holidays in the Great Outdoors:

When you’re heading out into nature or taking part in some planned adventurous activities, you need super versatile gear. Shorts, lightweight joggers pants, t-shirts and tank tops are all suitable women’s clothing for holiday bush hikes, and most other outdoor activities in summer. Make sure you wear sturdy footwear and bring a linen shirt to cover your arms from the sun. (If you’re doing something a little less intrepid, you can get away with a casual sundress and sandals/sneakers.)

Staycations and City Breaks

Let’s face it, some of us just won’t be heading far in the holiday season, but this doesn’t mean we can’t take the opportunity to rock some fabulous summer fashion!

A staycation in the city calls for practical-yet-stylish outfits that cater to the temperature. Midi dresses are a stylish option on a medium-to-hot summer day. Add sandals or sneakers and a comfortable tote or crossbody bag (even a backpack) and head out into your local area or CBD to explore something you don’t usually explore!

Another cute option for a staycation is a pairing of shorts or culottes with a summer shirt or blouse. A summery top and harem pants makes for another comfortable outfit, and will be super easy to move about in. For not-excessively hot days, a t-shirt and stretchy jogger pants with runners offers you the option of keeping active, whilst not overheating. Add a lightweight denim jacket for a touch of warmth and edge to your outfit, or a lightweight summer blazer if you’re going for a more polished look.

The Wellness Retreat

If you’re indulging in some self care these coming holidays, you need the right summer women’s clothing to relax in. Loose, comfortable pants and soft flowy skirts and dresses and lightweight knits will all ensure you can move about with ease. When choosing dresses, wrap dresses and maxi dresses are great options, as they tend to have loose or adjustable waists. Wide leg linen pants, culottes and harem pants are also great options, especially if you’re getting active with some yoga classes or casual strolls on your trip.

Neutral tones will work well with the zen setting of a retreat, but opt for colourful outfits if you’d prefer to look and feel extra vibrant. And don’t forget two-piece sets that pair together a matching top and pants. All they need is sandals and sunnies and your look is complete!

The Vacation to Somewhere Cold

If you happen to be heading to a cold part of the world during your summer holidays, you’ll need warm knit dresses and other knit garments. Remember, winter clothing can weigh your suitcase down, so it’s a good idea to curate yourself a simple capsule winter wardrobe so that you don’t overdo it. Include a couple of warm dresses, a jumper or cardigan, and outerwear, such as a vegan leather jacket, winter coat or puffer jacket. Then include some underlayers so that you can be prepared whether it’s super cold or just mildly chilly.

The Festive Section

A whole lot of festive events occur over the December and January holidays. Whether it’s an end of year work party, parties with family and friends, or you’re attending a summer festival, you’ll need bright and cheerful summer dresses.

Boho dresses, linen dresses, and floral dresses will all be appropriate for relaxed day parties and festivals. Cocktail dresses and other occasion dresses might be called upon for more formal special events, especially if they occur in the evening!

Just remember, when choosing a dress for a festive holiday event, dress for the weather. If it’s a scorching day, opt for sleeveless dresses in loose and plant-derived fabrics, as they will allow your skin to breathe. If it’s going to be a bit colder, you can go for dresses in synthetic fabrics, like polyester etc. You’ll also need to think about outer layers, like a cardigan or blazer, or even a crisp linen shirt.
