Must-Have Colours for Linen Tops in 2025

Linen tops are fast becoming a staple in most women’s wardrobes, especially in Australia. Our warm climate calls for tops in fabrics that are comfortable and breathable. We also like our tops to be high-quality and stylish, and linen just ticks all the boxes.

When choosing a linen top, colour will come into question. What colour will work best for your complexion, and as a part of your overall wardrobe? Thankfully, there are plenty of options to choose from, from long-standing classics like white linen tops, to eye-catching colours that are certain to brighten up your outfit. Basically, there’s a linen top in a colour that will fit your vibe.

Let’s look at what are set to be the popular linen top colours this year. Thankfully, most of these are on-trend year on, year out, so it’s hard to go wrong with your choice!

White linen tops

White is probably the most popular colour for a linen top. White is a classic choice for summer wear, as it deflects some sunrays, leaving you feeling a little cooler than you would feel in darker colours. Also, white is a light and bright colour, and looks good under the sunlight and on most skin tones. White also has a very fresh look, so you’re pretty much guaranteed to look clean and crisp in a white linen top.

White linen tops work well in casual settings, as well as in the workplace.

White linen button up shirt: This style of shirt is a good option for office wear. Wear tucked into tailored trousers or a pencil skirt. Add a fitted blazer and you’ll look work-ready. (This will all work with a white linen blouse too.)

The white linen shirt also works well in casual settings. To amp up the relaxed vibe, roll the sleeves up to elbow length and/or leave a few buttons undone at the collar.

White linen shirt as outerwear

A white linen shirt is a super handy outer layer on a hot day, especially if you’re wearing a T-shirt or singlet top. The white shirt can easily be added to protect your arms from the sun, or to add a bit of extra warmth if a cool breeze arrives. For casual wear you can wear the white linen shirt untucked, or even tie it at the waist.

White linen blouses: With white linen blouses, you may not be able to be as flexible with undoing buttons and rolling up sleeves as you are with a shirt, however a blouse will work well as part of an ensemble for work, provided it’s the type you can tuck in.

If you head to a lot of casual events and require casual tops, both white linen shirts and blouses will look relaxed and chic worn untucked over a pair of jeans.

White linen tunic tops are another top we must mention here. Again, they can look great over jeans, leggings or even over long shorts.

Black linen tops

When everyone else is opting for light-colours and tones in spring and summer, choosing a black linen top will make you stand out. There’s something inherently stylish (dare we say, cool?) about black linen tops. And while you are going against the grain wearing black in summer, you still get all the benefits of wearing linen, in that your top will feel light to wear and breathable.

Black linen tops are a great transitional option. You can wear black in any season, and it will be easily styled with autumnal and winter colours. This means you can enjoy the benefits of wearing linen all year round. (Want to know the benefits? See ‘Why is linen so great?’ below.)

Light Denim and Dark Denim blue

You can't go wrong with a linen top in a  denim blue shade. Whether it's a light denim or a dark denim linen top, denim blue is a staple and utilitarian colour that reminds us of classic blue denim dresses and jackets. A linen shirt in blue denim colour will look like a denim shirt, but feel  lighter to wear.

Like white, denim is one of those colours that looks good on almost every complexion, but choose the shade that looks best on you.

Where to wear a denim-colour linen top? Probably not to work, unless your workplace is very casual. Generally, denim colours look best in casual settings, so wear for outings to the shops, barbecues, and so on.

Khaki and navy

These classic colours are always on trend and work particularly well for summer and autumn wear. Both colours are commonly used in military uniforms, so they give off an air of reliability and quality. They tend to suit most skin tones, which is why they are go-to colours season after season. They are also great colours for people with ginger hair, as they provide a nice contrast with the hair colour, rather than being too close to it.

Bright colours

We're throwing any bright and bold colours into this box. Think bold oranges, fuchsia pinks, purple and anything citrus. Fortunately, linen takes well to being dyed with vibrant colours, so there are plenty of options available and if you wear a bold colour linen top, you'll not only brighten up your day, but also everyone else's.

Bold colours linen tops can absolutely be worn to work, as well as in most casual settings. Note, in particular, bright colour linen tops with embellishments like sequins or other detailing that jazz up the top a little and lift it from run-of-the-mill to a top with a focus point.

Print linen tops

Whilst a print is not a set colour as such, we can neglect to mention that print linen tops are continuing to be popular in 2025. This is mainly because there’s a wide range of print linen tops available, in numerous designs and colours, so anyone can find a print to exactly suit them.

Whether it's a floral, botanical, abstract, or geometric print, it's certainly worth having some fun with linen print tops.

Again, print tops will work in both the workplace and for all those activities after you’ve clocked off.

Why is linen so great?

There are numerous benefits to wearing linen, a fabric that’s been around for literally ages!

It’s a low waste material: Linen is derived from the flax plant, which is reasonably easy to grow, requires few pesticides (if any), and requires minimal water. All parts of the linen plant are used in production, so there’s minimal waste.

It’s a bacterial battler: Linen naturally is antibacterial, so you don’t need to worry about unpleasant odours building up in your linen. Add to that, linen wicks moisture away from the body, so that you stay dry and cool in hot weather, rather than having moisture clinging to your skin, which only encourages bacterial growth.

It has good vibes: Most of us probably don’t know that the fabrics we wear have a vibrational frequency. The higher the frequency, the better the benefits for the wearer. Linen is said to have a frequency of 5,000 Hz, which is far preferable to the zero frequency offered by synthetic fabrics. A higher frequency is thought to not interfere with the body’s natural field of energy, and therefore our wellbeing is enhanced, rather than hindered.
