Linen Looks We Love: Breathable, Beautiful Styles for a Warm Spring

Spring is the perfect time to bring linen garments into your wardrobe. Whether it’s soft linen blouses for brunches, tidy button-up linen shirts for work, loose linen pants for relaxing around the house, or flowy linen dresses for weekend outings, linen is most certainly a fabric to embrace when the weather warms up.

Let’s look at linen’s marvellous attributes, which linen garments we’ll see over spring and summer, and how you can layer linen garments so that they work well with your wardrobe at any time of year.

Linen: The Most Breathable Fabric for Spring

Perhaps the most beneficial attribute of linen fabric is its breathability. Linen fabric is made from a loosely woven fibre made from the flax plant. This loose weave allows moisture to circulate, so that when you perspire, dampness isn’t trapped against your body. Instead, linen draws the moisture away from your body, allowing it to evaporate into the air. All up, you feel dry, even when you sweat!

Add to that, linen is miraculously thermoregulating, meaning that it keeps you cold when the weather is hot, and offers a measure of warmth when the weather cools down.

But wait, there’s more! Linen fibres also have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, so much so that in the past, bandages were made from linen! So when you wear linen, odours from perspiration are minimised. And when appropriately washed, linen clothing doesn’t hold onto those nasty odours in the same way many synthetic fabrics will.

What else does linen have to offer?

  • It’s anti-static, so won’t cling to your body and attract dust, like synthetic fabrics often do.
  • Linen dries quickly after you wash it, and doesn’t require ironing. Bonus!
  • Linen is durable and will usually last you a long time, especially if you adhere to care instructions.
  • It’s considered an eco-friendly fabric, as flax requires little water and/or pesticides to grow.
  • Linen garments soften the more that you wear them. Bonus #2!

Trending Spring Linen Styles

Let’s look at the must-have linen pieces you should include in your spring wardrobe this year.

Linen dresses

Anyone who chooses to wear a linen dress is a fan of comfort. Linen dresses are soft, breezy and most commonly, made in loose-fitting designs that don’t constrict the body. This allows for free movement and plenty of airflow, which is great news in spring and summer.

Popular spring linen dress styles for 2025 include floral print linen dresses, abstract print dresses, and linen dresses with curved or asymmetrical hemlines. These dresses come mostly in short or midi length, but you’ll see some long dresses out there too.

For those who enjoy a little more structure, a linen shirt dress is a great option. These often include a waist belt, which adds shape, and the button up front and collar adds a little polish to this casual dress.

Styling linen dresses for spring

For work: Choose a structured linen midi dress for the workplace, such as a shirt dress. Neutrals are a good option for the office (navy, khaki, grey, beige, black, brown and cream). Layer with a lightweight cardigan or blazer, particularly if you’re in air conditioning. Also add base layers, like a camisole or slip if it is likely to be cool indoors, or if your linen dress is at all transparent. Add closed toe heels or flats.

For the weekend: Opt for a relaxed-fit linen dress, whether it be short or midi length. Florals are always fun in spring, and light colours like pale blue and pink also look fresh. If it’s a long sleeve dress, roll up the sleeves. Pair with light-coloured sandals or canvas flats/sneakers. For an extra layer, a denim jacket or lightweight cardigan will work well.

Linen pants

Women’s linen pants are a blessing in spring and summer. They’re lightweight, breathable, and non-constricting, so you don’t have that feeling of being too hot in your pants that you can get when wearing jeans during the warm months.

Trending this year are loose-fitting linen pants in easy-to-wear designs, with some wide-leg varieties allowing extra air flow to the legs, and others with elasticised waistbands, allowing for stretch at the hips and waist.

Styling spring linen pants:

For work: Linen pants can be a comfortable option for work. Choose linen pants that resemble a standard tailored pant, with a slim leg or tailored cut. (Save baggy styles that are elasticised at the ankles for the weekend.) Also, opt for a solid linen, as transparent linen can show underwear. Colourwise, opt for dark neutrals if you want to play it safe. Wear with a neutral-coloured top, or linen shirt or blouse. Add a linen blazer or a light knit cardigan, and work appropriate shoes of course.

For the weekend: Keep it simple by pairing linen pants with a tank top, t-shirt or lightweight linen blouse. Add canvas sneakers or sandals, a broad brimmed hat and bag. Simple!

Linen tops

Perhaps one of the best uses for linen fabric is in linen tops. After all, our top half is where we experience the results of perspiration the most, and when we wear synthetic tops in warm weather, we often deal with trapped heat and unpleasant odours. With linen, however, we don’t have to worry about it, as it is breathable. Add to that, linen is lightweight, which works for spring linen tops.

There are plenty of options when it comes to spring linen tops, including linen double layer tops, linen high-low tops, linen shirts, linen floral blouses, linen tunic tops, linen blazers and more. They all have a relaxed look to them, which works well if you’re going for light and laid-back vibes.

Styling spring linen tops:

For work: For a spring work day, tuck a white, cream, or soft blue linen blouse into a pencil skirt or high-waisted tailored pants (a floral blouse can also work well). Add work-appropriate flats or heels, a slim belt and minimal jewellery.

For the weekend: Pair a relaxed-fit floral linen shirt with blue jeans or a denim skirt. Pair with sneakers or espadrilles, and finish with a crossbody bag and sunglasses.

Layering linen

Though linen is a great fabric for warm weather, with clever layering, you can wear linen pieces in cool weather too. It all comes down to layering. Here are some useful tips:

  • A button up linen shirt always looks cute and polished when worn beneath a knit jumper or cardigan. Opt for lightweight knits in spring and summer, and denser knits for autumn and winter.
  • Wear a thermal top or camisole beneath your linen shirt. Preferably, opt for a sleeveless top, so that you take advantage of linen’s moisture-wicking properties around the underarms.
  • If linen is part of your layered ensemble, when possible, keep the linen layer against your body, so you get linen’s full breathability benefits. Also, if possible, pair linen with other natural fibres, like cotton or wool, (or with more linen), as these natural fibres will breathe better than synthetic fabrics will.
  • Adding a blazer over a linen dress or button-up linen shirt will keep you protected from the elements, and at the same time, add a stylish finish to your outfit.

Linen care tips

Linen can last for a long time if you care for it right. Follow these tips for best linen care:

  • Wash your linen tops, dresses and pants in either cold or lukewarm water. The optimal method is by hand, but using a gentle cycle in the machine should be okay.
  • Only use a mild laundry detergent. Never use bleach as it can weaken the fibres in linen.
  • Dry your linen in the shade outdoors if possible (avoid the tumble dryer).
  • Iron on a linen setting, and iron while the linen is still slightly damp.
  • Store your linen in a dry, cool place.
