From Italy with love (Made in Italy styles)

While fashion is capricious, certain things are eternal, and Italian style is one such thing. Though fashion in Italy changes seasonally like everywhere else (and Italian designers are largely the leaders in these changes), there’s an essential Italian style that remains, no matter the season.

So let’s have a little look at what that special Italian something is.

Firstly, Italians love wearing high quality and comfortable cloth. Whether it’s soft, breathable linen or lustrous silk, Italians won’t waiver on comfort when it comes to dressing. Sure, you may see some impractically high heels on the streets of Milan, but you can be certain the wearers are also dressed in some soft and comfortable fabrics to balance it all out.

Italians also know how to dress for summer, a time when both fashion stores and street markets fill up with clothing in comfortable linens, cottons and silks. With heat getting to extremes in Italian cities, there’s no room for feeling hot and constricted.

Polka Dot Linen Crop Pants

Let’s look at some great Made in Italy clothing items available at Femme Connection, starting with these Polka Dot Linen Crop Pants. Crop pants are a real Italian favourite, and these ones are perfect for warm weather, with their lightweight fabric and relaxed fit. They retain a little structure, with a front seam and front button detail with belt loops, and they also have a lovely ruched detail on the hem. These crop pants would work well with a neat t-shirt for a casual look or pair with a sleeveless top, a linen blazer in a bold colour (Italian chic), tan heels, and a bright lipstick.

Polka Dot Short Dress

Continuing with linen is this ultra comfortable, knee-length Italian-made Polka Dot Linen Dress. A great dress for summer you’ll get plenty of wear out of, this frock is perfect for strolling in the city, with its short cuff sleeves, side pockets, and cute buttons on both sides of the hem. Wear it with a summer hat, white canvas sneakers or comfortable strappy sandals. Add a canvas or woven shoulder bag and your outfit is complete.

Abstract Print Top

In terms of tops, you may see young Milanese fashionistas wearing fitted, cropped styles, but across Italy, Italian women mostly keep things relaxed, with loose-fitting tops that hang flatteringly over blue jeans or slim fit pants. This Abstract Print Top is a great example. It has a rounded neckline, loose cropped sleeves that allow for plenty of airflow during the heat, comfortable pockets for your hands, and it hangs flatteringly over pants.

With its feminine broderie anglaise detail and collared neckline, the tiny eyelets in the fabric keep the air flowing through to your skin on those hot days. It could be worn with jeans, light summer pants, tailored shorts or a skirt. Add our popular Cinched Buckle Belt if you want to accentuate the waistline.

Another classic Italian fashion item is the denim skirt. Worn with a scoop t-shirt, tank top and/or knitted sweater, the denim skirt forms part of a popular casual street look. This great slim fit, Italian-made Reversible Floral Denim Skirt gives you the flexibility to choose between straight blue denim and fun flowers when you’re in the mood for a pattern. It has a classic button-up waist, double-sided zip fly, and belt loops on both sides. In summer, wear it with strappy sandals or canvas sneakers. When the temperatures cool, it would look stylish with ankle boots and a denim or faux leather jacket.

For evenings, whilst there’s usually no formal dress code when heading out, Italians do like to dress up for dinner. Bright colours are popular in spring, and in summer, more muted tones are preferred, (and black is always in style). This Tuscany Sleeveless Tiered Midi Dress drapes elegantly over the figure, and would flatter any shape. Made in Italy with 70% silk, this dress has a luxurious appearance and feel, yet has a fashionable look with its frayed, un-hemmed frills. Wear it to the outdoor restaurant at dusk and enjoy with an aperitif. Saluti!

Wear delicate heels or ankle boots, depending on the temperature.
