How to transition your wardrobe from winter to spring

With winter in full swing, many of us are eagerly anticipating spring! No matter how much we love those cold days where we can rug up in cosy layers, it’s a welcome relief when spring makes its entrance and we can release the shackles of heavy winter clothes! Who doesn’t love sparkling spring days when you can finally get a little sun on your Vitamin-D starved body?

So with the approaching change of seasons, it’s time to consider how to transition your wardrobe from winter to spring. How do you dress to stay warm enough on cold mornings and evenings, yet not feel baked in the afternoons?

Well, it’s simple! By freeing up your wardrobe of items you won’t need in the warmer weather, working with layers and colour and adding a healthy dose of florals, you can make the transition from winter to spring with little effort! The trick with this transition is to not perform a complete overhaul of your wardrobe, but instead, swap out some winter layers with fresh spring pieces, all while keeping it casual and comfortable.

So here are some pointers to get you through the season switch!

Swap the puffer for the trench

Swap the puffer for the trench

As the seasons transition, you want to put aside anything hot and bulky, as there’s no way you’ll get out of winter if you’re overloaded with weight and too warm! So pack away the heavy winter gear! You know what I’m talking about. It’s that winter puffer or quilted coat you’ve lived in for the past few months. Give it a sweet kiss goodbye until next year.

But you’ll still need outer layers, so hold onto blazers, denim jackets, faux leather jackets, and trench coats! These are lightweight, easy to transport, and they comfortably cross seasons. They’re also perfect for layering on spring days that start out wintery. So throw your trench coat over your outfit in the morning, and when the day warms up, fold it up and pop it in your shoulder bag. The same goes for a simple faux leather or denim jacket.

Style idea: Wear our stylish Jaguar Solid Trench Coat (in any of the available colours) over this divine Fonda Shirt Dress. The knee-length coat offers the smart trench look, and as a bonus, it is very light to wear. Combined with the dress’s abstract print and mandarin collar, you will really draw interest. Wear with your favourite winter ankle boots or platform sneakers!

Rock the blazer!

Rock the blazer!

If you happen to have a boyfriend blazer in your collection (a more casual cut than your traditional blazer, with a longer hem that sits mid thigh), it’s a great option to throw over a tank top, T-shirt or crisp shirt. You can wear it with harem pants, culottes, slim fit pants or high waisted jeans. Add ankle boots, loafers or sneakers, and you’ll achieve a stylish yet casual look that’s adaptable according to changing temperatures!

And if you don’t own a boyfriend blazer, but you’re after a stylish look, consider this Roxy Crop Jacket, which has blazer vibes but is a little edgier with its crop length, contrast panel on the back, and hi-low hem.

Style idea: Pair these cute Janja Studded Jogger Pants with your favourite graphic t-shirt and boyfriend blazer (or the Roxy). Wear sneakers or ankle boots, and you’ll ooze cool!

Spring layering

Spring layering

Layering is a must-do styling tactic during spring, so opt for lightweight items like regular or oversized cardigans and sweaters (add a light scarf if needed). You basically want to be equipped for warmth, but be able to easily remove items and stow them in your shoulder bag when the day warms up.

A great option is the maxi-cardigan, which offers the advantage of gently draping over your silhouette and keeping your waist and lower half warm. It’s also lightweight enough to tuck into your bag easily. This Darina Waterfall Knit Cardigan is a great example, which offers the smart look of a trench coat, with its wide lapel collar. Available in some gorgeous spring-friendly colours, like fuchsia, olive, emerald, and camel, this one’s a must-have for spring.

Style idea: For an easy layered look, try a floral midi dress, your fave oversized cardi or lightweight sweater, ankle boots and shoulder bag. Add a slim gold or silver neck chain and you have the perfect feminine look for spring!

Footwear

Footwear

It’s time to ditch the thick winter tights and pack away the snow boots until next year! Spring is the time for footwear that allows you to be a little lighter on your feet. Ankle boots are a great option, whether flat or with a heel.

Mule shoes (backless) also work well, as they keep your toes warm while allowing for coolness at your heel, (you can also easily slip them on and off if you want to run around on the grass).

Loafers are another go-to, as they keep your feet warm, yet you can wear low cut ankle socks which allow for airflow.

And then there’s sneakers, which work so well to create a casual vibe with a range of outfits. Go for platform sneakers if you want to give yourself a bit of a lift!

Add some colour pops

Add some colour pops

An easy trick to morphing from winter to spring is to change your colour palette. Where in winter you might have worn rich and warm colours, in spring you can cool things down a little to achieve an overall lighter and brighter palette. So rather than opting for dark blue denim jeans, try selecting a pale blue, pink or white pair of pants instead. Or wear a top in a pastel, olive or otherwise neutral colour. The overall aim is to wear paler tones that catch the light and offer a fresh look.

But of course you can still have fun with vibrant colours in spring! Why not rock something bright and on-trend—such as lavender, teal, blood orange and acid lime, which according to InStyle.com, are on the hotlist this spring season!

Take this Belle Long Balloon Sleeve Shirt as a great example of vibrant spring colours, with its print in a mix of citrus orange, hot pink, and two shades of red. With balloon sleeves and a curved hem, this breezy blouse will work well with basics like slim-fit pants, jeans, or even a faux leather skirt like the Aubree Vegan Leather Maxi Skirt.

There’s also the Peta Animal Print Pleated Blouse, that offers a whole lot of spring zing with its multi-colour print in magenta, violet, and poppy red.

Bring out the florals!

Bring out the florals!

There’s no better way to declare spring has arrived than throwing on something floral! Fresh flowers symbolise spring, after all, so grab that cute floral dress and pair it with ankle boots, your favourite cardigan and shoulder bag for a feminine spring look. If it really warms up, swap out the cardigan and boots with a light denim jacket and sneakers or wedge sandals.

Try this on for size – this Rio Floral Halter Neck Midi Dress has a flattering wrap style and dancefloor-worthy ruffle hi-low hem! It’s floral print, making it the perfect dress to wear to a sophisticated brunch, hen’s party or wedding event. Wear it with strappy heels, drop earrings, and a cute shoulder purse or clutch.

And don’t forget floral blouses! Pair a floral blouse with light-wash denim jeans or pastel or slim-fit pants for a bright and springy look that’s perfect for strolls and brunches with your pals.

Style idea: Spring vibes making you feel a little bohemian? Try this Lourdes Abstract Print Balloon Sleeve Blouse in a boho floral print. With its embellished V-neckline and balloon sleeves with shirred elastic frill cuffs, it’s a very feminine casual blouse that would look great with a pair of slim fit pants like these Arlia Button Detail Pants.

Embrace the blouse!

Blouses are a super useful item when it comes to crossing over between winter and spring, as you can keep yourself warm with a spencer vest or fitted turtleneck top underneath on days where it’s a little chilly.

Try this Belle Long Balloon Sleeve Shirt. Available in chocolate and multi-pink abstract prints, this would look great with tailored pants for a smart work look, or with the Aubree Vegan Leather Maxi Skirt for a stylish weekend vibe.
