Race Day Dresses - What to wear at the Melbourne Races

Spring has sprung and you know what that means - it’s time for Spring Racing Carnival dresses!

Whether you’re planning to head to the racetrack, a marquee event, or just a private race day party at a friend’s, Femme Connection is here to fit you out with that special race day dress.

This year, there’s so much fun in the spring trends. We’ve well and truly come out of the doldrums and are ready for bright and bold colours. Dopamine dressing is where it’s at! So dress according to your mood (or the mood you’re aiming for) and embrace those bold colours and vibrant prints.

When it comes to dress styles, there’s no limit on the trimmings your dress can have this spring racing season. Frills, ruffles, puff sleeves -  the more ostentatious the better! At the same time, straight lines are also on trend, with trouser suits and jumpsuits being a great option for picnicking on the lawns.

Have a look at some of the great dresses we have in stock that will have you looking and feeling marvellous on race day.

Floral dresses

Floral dresses

Florals are perennially in when it comes to spring racing carnival dresses. They look pretty as a picture worn with heels and a race day hat.

When it comes to florals, there are so many choices of print. You can opt for big, bold tropical flowers, or dainty little daisies.

Whatever you choose, it always looks nice if your hat and handbag pick up some colour from your dress. (But of course, there are no rules, so feel free to pick a contrasting colour instead for your bag and heels).

This gorgeous Floral Skater Dress with pleated V-neckline and darted bust is ripe with big bold lilies. Worn with a white, navy or rich red hat, clutch and strappy heels, you just might score a nomination for fashions on the field!

If you prefer delicate daisies, this understated and elegant Frill Sleeve Floral Midi Dress would look gorgeous with white or tan strappy heels, a white or pastel pink clutch, and a wide brim hat or beret. Ooh la la!

Lastly on the floral front, this Halter Neck Paisley Floral Dress is the perfect dress for kicking up your heels at the marquee cocktail party. With ultra feminine frills and an on-trend halter neck, this dress would look perfect with high strappy heels, clutch, and white, grey or burgundy curled brim fedora hat. Add a flower or a feather and you’ll be turning heads.

Lace outfits

Lace outfits

Ladies Day (Oaks Day) is not only about florals. It’s also about delicate lace and bright colour! So this Lace Hi Low Dress in rich red is the perfect option for Ladies Day attire. Its bold colour makes for the ideal blank canvas, so you can really go to town when it comes to your hat. Keeping the busyness on your head, why not opt for a hat with feathers, flowers, ribbons, lace, or all of the above? A dress like this would also look great with long satin or lace gloves and a clutch. Both strappy or closed-toe heels would look stunning with this little number.

This Lace Bodice Jumpsuit with pleated legs is a comfortable and stylish option for race day. It would look stunning with a white beaded headband or black and white Dior Brim (mushroom shaped) hat. Wear with strappy stilettos to balance the wide leg silhouette, or white patent leather lace up shoes for a bold statement. Add a stylish clutch and, voilá! Très chic!

This easy-to-wear Lace Midi Dress has a delicate fabric, and its flattering shape will have you looking graceful and elegant. We’d love to see this one with a white or rich red percher hat!

Frilly, flirty and flouncy!

Frilly, flirty and flouncy!

This Solid Mock Wrap Dress in emerald has gorgeous flouncy sleeves that drape gorgeously over your upper arms. Being a wrap dress, it’s enormously comfortable, and extremely flattering at the same time. An embellished crown would look divine with this frock. Add, of course, closed-toe heels and a sparkly clutch!

There’s no rule that says you have to wear a dress to the races. This ruffle Tulle Skirt in pink really fulfils the frill factor, and would look angelic with a Halo hat, or Turban shape hat in a similar shade. We would also love to see it paired with this Off The Shoulder Lace Top in pale pink, or bright red for fun!

Finally, on the flirty front, you can’t go past polka dots! (Think of the beautiful milk chocolate polka dot dress Julia Roberts’ wore to the polo in Pretty Woman!) This Polka Dot Shirt Dress is the perfect race day frock when you want to look confident and stylish, but you don’t want to fuss around. Match it with strappy tan or white heels, purse, and boater hat. You’ll be a very pretty woman on race day!
